How to Read Your Polish Payslip — A Guide for Foreign Workers

When you receive your first payslip (pasek wypłaty) in Poland, it can look like a confusing mix of numbers and abbreviations. This guide explains what every line means.

What Is a Polish Payslip?

A payslip is a document your employer must provide with every salary payment. It shows: how much you earned (gross) and how much you actually receive in your bank account (net).

Key Components

1. Wynagrodzenie brutto (Gross Salary)

Your salary before any deductions — the amount stated in your employment contract. Minimum wage in Poland in 2026: 4,666 PLN gross per month.

2. Składki ZUS (Social Security Contributions)

ZUS (Zakład Ubezpieczeń Społecznych) is Poland's social insurance institution. The following are deducted from your gross salary:

ContributionRate (employee)
Pension (emerytalna)9.76%
Disability (rentowa)1.5%
Sick pay (chorobowa)2.45%
Total13.71%

Example (4,000 PLN gross): ZUS = 548.40 PLN

What these contributions give you:

  • Pension — builds your Polish pension entitlement
  • Disability — covers long-term inability to work
  • Sick pay — right to L4 sick leave after 90 days of contribution

3. Składka zdrowotna (Health Insurance — NFZ)

9% of the base (gross minus ZUS). Gives you access to Poland's public healthcare system.

Example: (4,000 – 548.40) × 9% = 310.64 PLN

4. Zaliczka na podatek PIT (Income Tax Advance)

Rate: 12% up to 120,000 PLN/year. Tax-free allowance: 30,000 PLN/year.

Tax tip: spending more than 183 days in Poland = Polish tax resident = you must file a PIT-37 annual return by end of April the following year.

5. Wynagrodzenie netto (Net Salary — Take-Home Pay)

Gross – ZUS – NFZ – PIT = Net

Full example (4,000 PLN gross):

  • ZUS: –548.40 PLN
  • NFZ: –310.64 PLN
  • PIT advance (after allowance): –approx. 168.00 PLN
  • Net: approx. 2,972.96 PLN

6. Other Lines on Your Payslip

  • Premie — bonuses and allowances
  • Dodatek nocny — night shift allowance (20% of hourly rate per night hour)
  • Potrącenia — deductions (e.g. housing costs — only with a separate written agreement!)
  • Wynagrodzenie chorobowe — sick pay: first 33 days/year paid by employer at 80% of salary

How to Check Your Payslip Is Correct

  1. Does gross match your contract?
  2. Is ZUS = 13.71% × gross?
  3. Is NFZ = 9% × (gross – ZUS)?
  4. Unknown deductions? You have the right to a full explanation from HR
