Public Transport in Poland: A Guide for Foreign Workers
Starting work through Nexflow often means a new city and new commuting routes. Public transport is the most convenient and affordable way to get to your warehouse, logistics centre, or office.
Types of Public Transport in Poland
- Bus (autobus) — available in all cities, the primary mode of transport
- Tram (tramwaj) — in Warsaw, Wrocław, Kraków, Poznań, Łódź and other large cities
- Metro — only in Warsaw (lines M1 and M2)
- SKM / City rail — fast rail connecting city centres with suburbs
Each city manages its own network:
- Warsaw: ZTM (Zarząd Transportu Miejskiego)
- Wrocław: MPK Wrocław
- Kraków: MPK Kraków
- Poznań: ZTM Poznań
How to Buy a Ticket
1. Ticket machines (biletomat) — at stops and metro stations. Accept cards and cash. Many have an English language menu.
2. Mobile apps (most convenient):
- Jakdojade — route planning and ticket purchase (available in English, Ukrainian, and Russian)
- mPay — buy tickets via phone
- City-specific apps (WTP Mobile, mKraków, etc.)
3. Kiosks and shops — paper tickets at Ruch and Empik kiosks, and small shops near stops.
4. From the driver — only on some routes in some cities. In Warsaw, buying from the driver costs more.
How to Validate Your Ticket
After boarding, you must validate your ticket in the kasownik — the yellow device near the doors. An unvalidated ticket = travelling without a ticket, even if you paid for it.
If you have a ticket in a mobile app, activate it in the app when boarding.
City Transport Cards
If you work regularly in one city, it is worth getting a transport card:
| City | Card |
|---|---|
| Warsaw | Warszawska Karta Miejska (WKM) |
| Wrocław | Urbancard |
| Kraków | Krakowska Karta Miejska (KKM) |
| Poznań | PEKA |
A card lets you buy monthly passes — much cheaper than single tickets.
Ticket Inspections
Polish public transport has regular ticket inspections. Inspectors (uniformed or plainclothes) check tickets. Travelling without a valid ticket = a fine (mandat).
Fines vary by city:
- Warsaw: ~266 PLN
- Wrocław, Kraków: ~200 PLN
Remember: your ticket must be validated, even if you bought it.
