One of the first things to sort out after arriving in Poland is a local SIM card. You need it to stay in touch with your employer, family and for official purposes. This guide covers everything from buying a prepaid card on day one to switching to a monthly plan.

Do You Need a PESEL to Buy a SIM Card?

No — to buy a prepaid SIM card your passport is enough. Since 2023, SIM registration is compulsory for everyone, but operators accept a passport as a valid ID document. The process takes a few minutes.

Main Mobile Networks in Poland

• Play – most popular among Ukrainian and foreign workers; good coverage and competitive prepaid packages.
• T-Mobile – wide 5G network, good EU roaming.
• Orange – strong urban and motorway coverage.
• Plus – good rural coverage and strong signal at warehouses outside cities.

SIM cards are sold at operator stores, newsagents, Żabka convenience shops and supermarkets.

How to Activate a SIM Card

1. Buy a SIM card – from an operator store, Ruch kiosk, Żabka or a supermarket.
2. Register the card – provide your name, surname and passport number (online or in-store). Registration is required by law.
3. Top up and activate – buy a voucher or top up online, then activate your chosen package.

• Higher per-unit cost for calls and data than a contract
