Temporary Protection in Poland: Rights and Procedures for Ukrainian Citizens
Since February 24, 2022, Poland has taken in over one million Ukrainians covered by temporary protection. What is this status and what rights does it give you?
What is temporary protection?
Temporary protection is a special status granted collectively to Ukrainian citizens who left the country after February 24, 2022. It is governed by the Polish Act of March 12, 2022, and EU Directive 2001/55/EC. You do not need to apply for asylum — the status is granted automatically.
Who is covered?
- Ukrainian citizens who left after February 24, 2022
- Stateless persons and third-country nationals who were legally residing in Ukraine
- Their family members (spouses, children, parents)
What rights does temporary protection give you?
1. Legal work without a permit
You can work for any employer without a separate work permit. The employer must notify the district labour office (powiatowy urząd pracy) within 14 days of hiring you.
2. Access to NFZ (National Health Fund)
When working under an employment contract or a civil-law contract (umowa zlecenie), you are insured with NFZ — just like Polish employees.
3. Education for children
Children under temporary protection attend Polish public schools on the same terms as Polish children.
4. PESEL UKR and Trusted Profile
After registering at your local gmina office, you will receive a PESEL number marked "UKR", which gives you access to the Trusted Profile (Profil Zaufany) and banking services.
5. Social benefits
You may be eligible for the 800+ child benefit programme, a one-time 300 PLN payment, and other forms of support.
How long does this status last?
Temporary protection has been extended several times. It is valid until September 30, 2026 (as of the date of publication). Check udsc.gov.pl for current information.
How to document your legal stay
- Register at your local gmina office → receive your PESEL UKR
- Apply for a temporary residence permit via gov.pl or your Regional Voivodeship Office
- You will receive a certificate confirming the legality of your stay
What to do when the status expires
Do not wait until the last moment. Options after expiry:
- Temporary residence permit for work purposes (zezwolenie na pobyt czasowy)
- Application for international protection (asylum)
- Polish Card (Karta Polaka) if you have Polish roots
