ZUS Pension in Poland — What Happens to Your Contributions When You Leave?
You have been working in Poland and paying ZUS contributions — but you are wondering what will happen to them when you return home or move to another country. This is one of the most common questions among foreign workers in Poland. The answer depends primarily on your country of origin and how long you have lived and worked in Poland.
How the ZUS Pension System Works
The Polish pension system is pay-as-you-go: the contributions you pay now finance the current pensions being paid out. As an employee, you pay contributions to ZUS (Zakład Ubezpieczeń Społecznych), and these are recorded on your individual pension account.
Your ZUS account consists of two sub-accounts:
- Pillar I (ZUS) — the main part of your pension contributions
- Pillar II (OFE or ZUS) — an optional component in Open Pension Funds
You can check the balance of your ZUS account at any time via the PUE ZUS portal (pue.zus.pl) or the mZUS mobile app.
Can I Get My Contributions Back When I Leave Poland?
In Poland, there is no mechanism to withdraw your accumulated pension contributions before reaching retirement age — regardless of whether you are Polish or a foreign national. Your contributions are effectively "locked" in your account until you retire.
What happens to your contributions after you leave Poland?
- The contributions remain in your ZUS account
- They are uprated annually by the valorisation index (ZUS recalculates the account value each year)
- After reaching Polish retirement age (60 for women, 65 for men), you can claim a Polish pension
Social Security Agreements
Poland has concluded social security agreements with many countries. This means that insurance periods accumulated in Poland can be combined with periods from another country when determining pension entitlement.
Countries with which Poland has such agreements (selected):
- Ukraine ✓
- USA, Canada, Australia
- All EU member states (under EU coordination regulations)
- Many other countries — the full list is available on the ZUS website (zus.pl)
If you return to Ukraine and meet that country's retirement conditions, ZUS and the Ukrainian social security authority can mutually recognise insurance periods from both countries.
When Can I Claim a Polish Pension While Living Abroad?
You can apply for a pension from ZUS regardless of where you live — including from abroad. To do so:
- Reach the Polish retirement age (65 for men, 60 for women)
- Submit an application to ZUS (this can be done through foreign social security institutions under bilateral agreements, or directly)
- The pension is paid to the bank account you specify — including a foreign account
A minimum pension from ZUS is guaranteed by the state if your insurance period is at least 20 years (women) or 25 years (men).
What If I Only Worked in Poland for a Few Years?
Even a short period of work in Poland generates contributions in your account. If you do not meet the minimum insurance period required for an independent ZUS pension, your account does not simply disappear — you can still benefit from a coordination agreement and combine periods from different countries.
Example: you worked 3 years in Poland and 22 years in Ukraine. Under the Polish-Ukrainian social security agreement, ZUS can recognise a combined total of 25 years — and calculate your pension proportionally to the Polish insurance period.
How to Check Your ZUS Contributions
You can do this free of charge:
- Via PUE ZUS (pue.zus.pl) — after setting up an account with Profil Zaufany or an e-ID card
- Via the mZUS mobile app
- In person at any ZUS branch with a valid identity document
- By calling the ZUS helpline: 22 560 16 00
Summary
ZUS contributions paid during your time working in Poland do not disappear after you leave. They stay on your account and you can claim a Polish pension after reaching Polish retirement age, even while living abroad. If your country has a social security agreement with Poland, you may also be able to combine insurance periods from both countries. Keep track of your contributions by logging into PUE ZUS.
